Search engine algorithms can’t ‘see’ images. They work with words. But when you name and code your images properly they have a small but handy SEO impact.
Here’s how to name images properly
Say your site sells bananas and ‘banana’ is one of your top key search terms:
- name your banana images sensibly. If it’s a photo of a banana, call it banana.jpg not something unhelpful like image6.jpg
- in the code, use an ‘alt’ tag to reinforce your message by using the word ‘banana’ within the text
- do the same with your ‘title’ tag to ram the point home. Just in case there’s any doubt left that it’s actually an image of a banana
