Clean and validate your html code with

What’s the best way to clean your web page code?

The more you fiddle with your website the more likely you are to muck up the html. Your site might still display and work fine but all sorts of horrid little jibblies can creep in and make the code messy.

Search engines prefer clean code. Beautiful code also helps with accessibility. So how do you give yours a spring clean? Use the validator.

It isn’t 100% obvious what to do unless you know your stuff, so follow these instructions:

  1. type your page url into the address box at the top of the page and click Check
  2.  if you get errors or warnings,  tick the Clean up Markup with HTML-Tidy box under Options and click the Revalidate button
  3. scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see your fresh code, cleaned and tidied for you, ready to copy
  4. paste it into your web page, test if it still works and upload the clean version to your site
  5. remember to save a copy of your original, messy page code so you don’t lose it completely… better safe than sorry!
  6. do the same with every page in your site
  7. donate if you can – it’s a brilliant service and saves a huge amount of faffing about, despair, frustration, fury, hair-pulling and hassle
